Sensorial

Categories :

Montessori sensorial materials are introduced to help refine the senses and each piece of material contains one isolated element, such as size, colour, sound, smell and texture. The materials help the children to recognise differences and similarities. To give the children a physical impression of quantities, shape and pattern.

The sensorial materials provide a crucial foundation for the later work including letter and number work. Shape defines the characteristics of all written letters and numerals, geometric shapes are introduced at an early stage to help with shape recognition and further extend vocabulary. Sensorial materials also provide opportunities for the child to explore and learn on their own, with limited support from the teacher, as there is an in-built control of error in the materials.
