Practical Life
The use of the Montessori practical life materials allows each child to develop independence and confidence. This is accomplished through meaningful activities. Using real life, familiar objects to acquire and perfect the skills of daily living. These exercises help to develop concentration and co-ordination of movement, together with perseverance and patience, as well as care of oneself and the environment. Emphasis is placed on courtesy, good manners and consideration for others. The practical life exercises also give the child an opportunity to explore, repeat and investigate in order to consolidate their development. Good practice will ensure that these materials incorporate a variety of materials, textures and opportunities. Practical life exercises also help the children to develop their fine motor skills and pincer grip.
